November Blue: Side by side for life

During the year we have several campaigns to encourage disease prevention that result in death when not properly followed. For this, as in the October Rose (link here https://lopesdias.com.br/en/pink-october-together-against-the-cancer/ ), in November we have the Blue November that reinforces the importance of the care with the health of the man on the prevention against prostate cancer.

The awareness campaign emerged in Australia in 2003 as Movember, a mix of mustache and november (November). The move began when a group of friends decided to draw men’s attention to issues that involved their health, such as depression and cancer. Since then, the participants of this movement begin the month of November with the face shaved leaving only the mustache.

In Brazil, in 2008, the Institute Side by Side brings the campaign of awareness as Blue November and highlights the importance of prevention and how to change the vision that many men have in relation to this type of examination. Previously this movement was only in a brief period, however, 4 years later, the Institute started to promote the entire month of mobilization for this campaign.

According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer is considered a third-age tumor, as about three-quarters of the world’s cases occur from the age of 65. Data from the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU) show that 20% of patients are diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease, which causes the mortality rate to reach 25% of patients. According to Inca estimates, this year there should be 61,200 new cases of prostate cancer in Brazil. Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that 14,484 men died from the disease in the country in 2015. In Brazil, prostate cancer is the second most common among men, behind only non-melanoma skin cancer.

Although it is a serious disease, about 90% of cases are curable, provided the diagnosis is made early. This is where the greatest challenge lies: prejudice. Most men avoid seeking the doctor for fear of touch examination, which, in addition to diagnosing a possible cancer, can diagnose other potential problems as well.

Therefore, if you have any questions, there are several health posts and doctors willing to give information on this subject. Prevent yourself, seek a doctor and do not let fears or uncertainties be obstacles to take care of your health.
