Pink October: Together against the cancer

About 60,000 new cases of breast cancer are being discovered in ever-younger women every year, according to data from the National Cancer Institute (Inca). The institute informs that, when discovered at the outset, there is 95% probability of full recovery. Breast cancer is one of the types of tumor that most causes the death of women in Brazil.

The campaign called October Rosa appears as a way to alert women. This movement began in the 1990s, in the United States, where states did isolated actions on the subject. With the subsequent approval of the American Congress, the month of October became the national breast cancer prevention month in the country. To mobilize the American population about the importance of action, cities began to adorn themselves with pink ties. Initially, the idea was launched by the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure and the bonds were given to the participants of the first Race for Healing held in New York in 1990. After that, the object was distributed in public places, races , fashion shows, among other events.

In Brazil, the first sign of involvement with the October Rose happened in October of 2002, when the Obelisk of the Ibirapuera, in São Paulo, was illuminated with the color. Years later, entities related to breast cancer illuminated rose monuments and buildings in several cities. Gradually, Brazil was won the symbolic color in all capitals and the month of October became a symbol of the fight for prevention and treatment. The Ministry of Health records a 35% increase in the number of examinations, from 3 million in 2010 to 4.1 million in 2016. As of July of this year, a total of 2.1 million tests were carried out.

Woman is a symbol of strength and delicacy, so we at Lopes Dias support this campaign and to help spread the need for examination and prevention. Watch for the signs, see a doctor and be warned. Together we are stronger!
