The Cresta | JohnatanSegal, FAIA

The Cresta is a single-family residence designed and built entirely of cast concrete in loco on a plot in the LowerHermosaof region of La Jolla, California. The house has three floors that are accentuated by floor-to-ceiling windows and large expanses open to the outside.

At first with a solid shape, the final product adheres planes on the roof and vertical walls that create interior and exterior volumes. Outer space was a key element in creating a home that would otherwise look small, now it appears to be larger and more private. Although this space creates a building void, the overall volume is kept intact. All four corners remain with walls and flat roofs to define the original box of the residence.

Adjacent to the front of the structure, a water mirror and a pool were integrated into the overall design design for thermal cooling and to create the illusion that the house is floating.

Due to the large extensions of operable glass, the thermal mass of the concrete, the sun protection and the insulating effect of the solar panel assembly, of 6.5kw, on the roof, supplies about 100% of the power demanded by the house.
